For those who live near the Minnesota-Wisconsin border, the Douglas County Highway W bridge used to provide a speedy way to get around.
Mary Munn, of Holyoke, shaved 14 miles off her commute to Duluth when she discovered County Highway W.
But the bridge abutments washed out when the Nemadji River flooded in 2018. County officials didn’t want to use the same old method to fix it because the bridge would still be vulnerable to washouts. But a permanent fix — one that would allow floodwaters to overtop the bridge — is expensive and officials say the county can’t afford it.

Instead, they did nothing, and the bridge has been out ever since.
The Esko School Board on Monday, Oct. 10, approved the latest designs for the district’s fitness center project.
Cloquet’s Miles Fischer defended his Lake Superior Conference title Tuesday, Oct. 11, finishing the boys race in 16 minutes, 34 seconds.
Fischer wasn’t in the lead early, but took control going down the hill at Grand View Golf Links and never looked back.
“I just knew I could push on the downhills pretty quick, so I used those to my advantage. Those downhills are really fun,” he said.
The ‘Jacks finished third overall among boys teams and fourth overall on the girls side.
